Dear future Hammond musician,
Welcome to Hammond High School! We have a wonderful band program with something for everyone and I am so excited for you to join us!
In order to participate in the band program, all students should register for course MU-400-1 with their 8th grade counselors.
You can learn more about our band program here. If you think that Concert Band is the best place for you, then you are all set until next year once you register for MU-400-1. If you are interested in auditioning for Wind Ensemble/Marching Band or Percussion Ensemble, please see the information below.

Audition Information
I. Scales
- You will be asked to perform the chromatic scale and perform two scales from the following keys: C, F, Bb, Eb, Ab,
- The chromatic scale should be performed evenly and smoothly throughout the full range that you know on your instrument. Major scales should be performed as an eighth note followed by sixteenth notes at a metronome marking of quarter note = 72.
II. Prepared Piece
- For a prepared piece, students may choose a piece from band or their private teacher that they believe appropriately demonstrates their ability level. If you would like a piece provided or a sample difficulty level, please see below for options for each instrument. Try to perform the music to the best of your ability. Focus on creating a good sound. If there are any parts you cannot play, that is alright - just try your best!
The best way to perform a good audition is to practice consistently. Take advantage of the time you have, and don’t wait until the last minute to practice. Work steadily during the entire time you have the music. It is easy to identify students that worked hard to prepare well, even if they are nervous or make mistakes!
AUDITIONS SHOULD BE RECORDED AND SENT TO MR. DUNLAP AT [email protected]
